Ahh, yes…We’ve reached mid-January. What a strange time of year, don’t you think? Everyone has finally settled down from the craziness of the holidays. Back to work, back to school, back to your usual year-round life. The weather here in Los Angeles always seems confused around this time. This morning, it was freezing af and by noon it was hot. I totes regretted wearing a sweater. It’s a strange time of the year, but it’s one I look forward to annually. This is the time of year when I smile and my wallet cries. IMATS, the International Makeup Artist Trade Show, arrives in Los Angeles.
I’ve made a poor attempt to “Vlog” my IMATS experience, which is essentially me walking around, shopping for a few hours (check out the video above). I figured an informational blog version would probably be a bit more helpful.
What’s an “IMATS”?
IMATS stands for “International Makeup Artist Trade Show”. It was the first trade show ever created for professional makeup artists , but it has grown into so much more since the first IMATS ever held in 1997. Now, 22 years later, IMATS has become a HUGE go-to destination for makeup artists & enthusiasts alike. They’ve expanded their focus more and now feature cosmetics, skincare and hair vendors.
IMATS is a three-day event annually held in different locations around the world. I attend the LA show, which is normally held at the Pasadena Convention Center, but they also have shows in New York, Atlanta, Vancouver, Toronto and London. It’s a fantastic place to network, get educated & watch world renowned artists do live demonstrations (They’re are INSANE, btw).
Pro Card Event
During this gorgeous three day expo, IMATS does feature a “Pro only” event on the first day. You must be a procard holder with Make-Up Artist Magazine, as they are the producers of IMATS. This also shows that you are legit. To obtain a “Pro Card” with Make-Up Artist Magazine, you have to provide three different credentials. MORE INFO:
What makes the Pro Card day so special is that it isn’t opened to the general public. There’s no long lines to purchase from vendors, there’s space to comfortably walk around and you are offered special “pro pricing”. IMATS also holds many pro classes & demonstrations, which is extremely helpful when it comes to mastering your craft. You’re not going to make it as a pro if you only learn from YouTube tutorials, I promise.
Considering 2019’s IMATS has just come to an end, it will probably be awhile before dates & tickets for 2020 will be announced/available. But I do highly recommend using this time to get approved for a Make Up Artist Magazine Pro Card so you can get in on Pro Day and receive pro discounts, masterclasses & more.
And for those Makeup Enthusiasts out there, you too will have a chance to purchase general admission to IMATS for their Saturday & Sunday shows.
